  • orlando interior painting team make patterns without wallpaperIf you think wallpaper is a royal pain in the butt, you’re not alone. Take it from our Orlando interior painting team – when it comes time to change up the look of a room, removing wallpaper can be a real hassle, and putting it on smoothly and evenly can be just as hard. But what if you want to decorate your home with stunning patterns and shapes? Isn’t wallpaper the only way to achieve such intricacy?

Not anymore! With the help of Sherwin-Williams’ high-quality, richly pigmented paints and a little creativity, it’s easy to create a patterned feature wall of your own – no wallpaper glue required. Here’s how it’s done:

    • Gather your materials. As with any painting project, you’ll need a dropcloth to protect the floor, painter’s tape, rollers and brushes, and of course, paint. Depending on how intricate your design is, you’ll want to get brushes in a few different sizes to make edges and corners crisp. And you’ll definitely want a ruler and a pencil to help you block out your pattern.
    • Measure your wall. Arguably, this is the most important step of the process as it helps you set yourself up for success. Measure the length and width of your feature wall and divide it into even sections, marking each section with a pencil. Determine the ideal size of each shape in your pattern, and plot them out with painter’s tape. After a final glance to make sure you like what you see…
    • Start painting with the lightest color in your pattern. If you haven’t selected paint colors by now, Sherwin-Williams’ ColorSnap visualizer can help you narrow down your choices. After the first color dries completely, tape off the shapes for your second color. Repeat the sequence as applicable, going from the lightest to the darkest color.

That’s all there is to it! You can make your pattern as simple or as intricate as you’d like, depending on your availability and comfort level. We particularly love a patterned wall in a dining room to help pull everything together, or as a focal point in an otherwise subtle bedroom. Not sure where to start on your interior painting project?
